A joint research team led by Professor Li Min has successfully obtained RMB 3 million in funding from the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Programme (Category C) to carry out a research project entitled *Preclinical Study of Exosome-Mediated Autophagy Inducers Targeting Neurons for Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy*. The team brings together experts and scholars from multiple fields, including Professor Ye Keqiang from Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology (SUAT), as well as members from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU): Professor Yang Zhijun, Dr Deng Zhiqiang and Dr Iyaswamy Ashok.
This project will combine the extensive experience of Professor Li’s team in developing novel traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-based therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases with the outstanding strengths of Professor Ye’s team in studying the molecular mechanisms of brain function and brain disorders. It will conduct an in-depth investigation into the disease-modifying activity of exosome-encapsulated small-molecule TCM compound CoryB against Alzheimer’s disease, and evaluate its therapeutic efficacy and drug development potential in multiple Alzheimer’s disease animal models. This study is of important clinical translational value. It is expected to provide a novel and highly effective therapeutic strategy and drug candidate for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, alleviate patients’ conditions, and reduce the burden on their families and society.
Professor Li Min expressed gratitude for the support from the Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, and stated that the team will continue to expand cooperation with more institutions of higher education to jointly advance cutting-edge scientific research, with the goal of benefiting the vast number of patients and their families.
